Remember the Santa Fe Super Chief?

I missed the original Super Chief but took it's only surviving remnant, the Amtrak Southwest Chief from Chicago to San Jose CA in 1992.

The RIDE is incredible and the scenery beyond belief - the only draw back is little (or no) Sleep in a Coach that is constantly rocking.  But if you spend most of your time in the Bar Car who cares?

The Train approaches speeds of 115 MPH in long straight passasges and zips through the night.

When you leave Illinois, the scenery through MO and Kansas is BORING as HELL - never saw SO MANY CORN SILOS!

Once you enter Colorado however, the majesty of the Rocky Mountains is suddenly upon you. After a half day of a steady climb, you enter Gallup Pass and exit in NM.

The Red Cliffs of NM are soon upon you and as you zip through INDIAN country, you come to a stop at Gallup, NM - the American Indian Capital of the nation.

After a half hour and chance to purchase jewelry and trinkets, it's back on Board as you enter AZ while darkness comes upon the Train.

By Morning, you are in the CA Mojave Desert and after another half day you arrive at LA.

The Connecting train to San Jose was late, so we took the bus from LA to Stockton, then another train and  bus to San Jose, CA.

BTW those HILLS of LA are REALLY HILLS - and in fact portions of LA intself are built on a series of connecting hills.

It's an INCREDIBLE Value for less than $250.00 and the ride of a lifetime!
