Nursing Home Abuse:

The New York Times Reports Medicare Ratings Allow Nursing Homes To Game The System

On August 25, 2014, The New York Times published an extensive article on the issue that nursing homes are using Medicare five star ratings as a seal of approval when in reality , the nursing homes are providing Medicare with incomplete information that can seriously mislead consumers about the facility.  The article has examples  of nursing homes which advertise five star approval and have deficiencies for which there has  been lawsuits by residents’ families against the same facilities.

An Elk Grove man was arrested last night on suspicion of abusing his elderly grandmother.

According to Elk Grove Police, 20-year old Michael William Anderson was involved in verbal argument with his 87-year old grandmother. During the course of the confrontation, Anderson allegedly pushed his grandmother causing her to fall to the floor.

The victim was taken to an area hospital for medical treatment and the suspect was arrested and booked into the county jail where he is being held on $100,000 bail.

Sen. Kirk fighting identity theft among seniors

Story by 89 WLS Reporter Nick Gale

(CHICAGO) U.S. Senator Mark Kirk is again pushing legislation to help curb identity theft and fraud among senior citizens.

Kirk met with senior citizens in Chicago to discuss a Senate bill he is pushing that would change Medicare cards carried by senior citizens. He hopes to model the card after IDs that military personnel carry. It would have a picture of the senior citizens and would encrypt their social security number. Carmenza Millian with AARP says it's a change for the good.

"I think that everybody knows that there has not been any change to the Medicare card in over 50 years, so now with the enhanced technology and the capability that we have, this is a way of preventing fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicare system," Millian said.

Kirk introduced The Medicare Common Access Card Act of 2014 (S. 2586) in July of this year.

Financial Abuse is a Thriving Industry

Financial Elder Abuse is a Thriving Industry

In July, a woman in Bakersfield, California was charged with elder abuse after her 73-year-old mother was found living in a decrepit one-bedroom apartment with no working plumbing and a rodent infestation. While the exploitation of senior citizens is rarely this egregious, it's surprisingly common. According to a 2013 study, elder abuse and neglect are estimated to affect between 700,000 and 1.2 million elderly people a year.

The annual cost runs in the tens of billions of dollars. And an important subset of that abuse is financial, targeting people's retirement security and life savings. Last year, Consumer Reports recapped a recent survey of 2,600 financial planners, and the findings were astonishing: "56 percent said they knew older clients who had been subject to unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices. Among reported cases, the average loss estimate was $140,500."

Sensor-based system is revamped version of two previously unsuccessful technolog

What is seldom said in the Media is the phenomenal list of Israeli High Tech and Computing inventions:

One of the things that has been striking in the recent Israelli/Gaza Conflict is the vast difference between the Arabs of Gaza and their Terrorist government and the State of Israel.

While the IDF sports state of the art equipment and rides around in Abrams Tanks and Humvees the Palestinians are often seen using DONKEY CARTS to haul their goods.

HUH?

Yes, they are using DONKEY CARTS in 2014.  Why?

Well we know what the answer is: Those Terror Tunnels that the IDF blasted to pieces cost Millions to build and consumed a full half of the Gaza Budget: The rest went to Vietnam era weapons, mortars and Scud Type missiles that can't hit a bull in the ass with a barn.

Israel has been using high tech tools to fight their war for survival but most do not know of their many achivevements: Here are a few in Computer Tech:

Israel’s Top 44 Inventions

Israel’s Top 44 Inventions

A new exhibit pays homage to Israeli ingenuity.

by  and

One of Israel’s sources of pride is the enormous number of inventions and innovations that have taken root on its soil over 63 years – despite challenges of geography, size and diplomacy. The ever-churning Israeli mind has brought us drip irrigation, the cherry tomato, the electric car grid, the Disk-on-Key and much more.
Through December at the Bloomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem, 44 indispensable Israeli inventions are being displayed and demonstrated. Curator Varda Gur Ben-Sheetrit tells Israel21c that hundreds of ingenious inventions were considered for Inventions, Inc., which offers visitors a chance to learn more and try their own hand at coming up with something new.
She emphasizes that many other Israeli inventions are deserving of being included. “We were, of course, constrained by space limitations, and also not every company we invited to exhibit responded,” she says.
Another feature of the exhibition is the Transparent Studio, where graduates of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design conduct a course on innovation in the area of light and lighting design. Visitors can observe their work-in-progress and share their ideas and suggestions with the designers.
Here, ISRAEL21c gives Israel’s top 44 inventions highlighted at the exhibition, in no particular order.
1. Given Imaging, a world leader in developing and marketing patient-friendly solutions for visualizing and detecting disorders of the GI tract, is best known for its PillCam (aka capsule endoscopy), now the gold standard for intestinal visualization.

2. Netafim is a worldwide pioneer in smart drip and micro-irrigation, starting from the idea of Israeli engineer Simcha Blass for releasing water in controlled, slow drips to provide precise crop irrigation. The kibbutz-owned company operates in 112 countries with 13 factories throughout the world.
3. Ormat Technologies designs, develops, builds, owns, manufactures and operates geothermal power plants worldwide, supplying clean geothermal power in more than 20 countries.
4. Pythagoras Solar makes the world’s first solar window, which combines energy efficiency, power generation and transparency. This transparent photovoltaic glass unit can be easily integrated into conventional building design and construction processes.

5. Hazera Genetics, a project of two professors at the Hebrew University Faculty of Agriculture, yielded the cherry tomato – a tasty salad fixing that ripens slowly and doesn’t rot in shipment.
6. BabySense is a non-touch, no-radiation device designed to prevent crib death. Made by HiSense, the device monitors a baby’s breathing and movements through the mattress during sleep. An auditory and visual alarm is activated if breathing ceases for more than 20 seconds or if breath rate slows to less than 10 breaths per minute.
7. EpiLady, the first electric hair remover (epilator), secured its leading position in the international beauty care market and since 1986 has sold almost 30 million units.
8. 3G Solar pioneered a low-cost alternative to silicon that generates significantly more electricity than leading silicon-based PV solar modules at a lower cost per kilowatt hour.
9. MobileEye combines a tiny digital camera with sophisticated algorithms to help drivers navigate more safely. The steering system-linked device sounds an alert when a driver is about to change lanes inadvertently, warns of an impending forward collision and detects pedestrians. MobileEye has deals with GM, BMW and Volvo, among others.

10. Leviathan Energy innovated the Wind Tulip, a cost-effective, silent, vibration-free wind turbine designed as an aesthetic environmental sculpture, producing clean energy at  high efficiency from any direction.
