Standing with their heads bowed as they await their punishment, these are the men who have been brutally whipped for violating Sharia law.
The public ceremony in the province of Banda Aceh in Indonesia saw four men led out on to a stage, one by one, in front of a mosque.
All of the men, with two appearing to be elderly, had been accused of violating Sharia law, the legal system of Islam which is derived from both the Koran and the rulings of the religion's scholars.

Another elderly looking man is also led to the stage for the public whipping in front of a baying crowd
As each was brought out in front of the baying crowd, they were forced to stand on a spot and cross their hands in front of them.
A masked man then appeared holding a cane, that will be whipped across their backs.
One by one each of the men is lashed across their bodies as punishment for violating Sharia law.
And as one of the men is caned, the guards standing at the edge of the stage can be seen laughing, despite the victim being in pain.

Whipping is one form of punishment imposed in Banda Aceh for violating the application of Islamic Sharia law
Banda Aceh is the only province in Indonesia to implement Sharia Law, which was first introduced in 2003 following the province’s awarding of special autonomy status.
Sharia law acts as a code that all Muslims are adhered to live to and include rules of prayers, fasting and donations to the poor and covers both public and private behaviour.
A flurry of new Islamic laws have been introduced in Aceh in recent years, drawing howls of protest from rights groups.

Earlier this year, Banda Aceh banned women from entertainment venues after 11pm unless they are accompanied by a husband or male family member.
Aceh district has also banned unmarried men and women from riding together on motorbikes.
More than 90 percent of Indonesians describe themselves as Muslim, but the vast majority practise a moderate form of the faith.
