Older Poor Americans And Their Search For Work

More than 7 million Americans age 65 years and older were still working last year. That’s up 60 percent from a decade ago.
A story in Harper’s Magazine opens a window into some of these people. They’re called “workampers” (a contraction of working and camping) and they travel across the country in their RVs, often performing seasonal work, selling fireworks, pumpkins, Christmas trees. They even work part-time in huge Amazon warehouses.
Many of these people say they love the work, which they need for the income. But there are obvious downsides. They don’t have health care and they don’t have unions to protect

Learning Software Is Like Making Pancakes

Vendor Voice: The process may be difficult at first, but quickly becomes a habit.
, Law Technology News
New software typically enters an organization riding on the promise that it will dramatically improve a key business process. Exhaustively evaluated to ensure it meets the technical and business requirements of the buyer, it is often deployed with great fanfare—an ally for an overworked team that will rely on the software every day to manage crucial projects. But soon thereafter, users often encounter problems using the software or view the software as deficient in key areas. Is the software broken? Does it not deliver where the vendor said it would?  Has the buyer been duped? Or has a lack of dynamic user training reduced the promised productivity gains?
It is fair to say that software today has never been more powerful. But app culture and social media have conditioned us to never be satisfied. With data overload and constant interruptions being a daily challenge for today’s workers, users often do not use more than the software’s basic feature set. Research from Microsoft Corp. in 2008 showed that the top five commands in Microsoft Word accounted for 32 percent of all command usage in the application. The top three? Copy, paste, save.
The software that we access and use everyday offers so much more than what the average user taps. What has resulted is that most people look to software updates to deliver new functions rather than understanding valuable features that may already exist in the product.

Reporting Elder Abuse Now Colorado Law

Boulder County honored in 2012 a credit union employee who contacted Longmont police when an 85-year-old customer reported $50,000 missing from an account.

That same year, a King Soopers employee in Lafayette also received the Elder Abuse and Prevention Award for warning a senior citizen who wanted to wire money that he likely was falling for a scam.

While those people voluntarily did the right thing, a new Colorado law requires employees and volunteers in a wide range of professions to report suspected elder abuse to police within 24 hours of witnessing the abuse or exploitation of someone who is 70 or older.

"We need the public's help to stop these types of crimes," Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur said.

New Elder Justice Roadmap to Combat Abuse of Elderly

Posted by:
Today the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the Elder Justice Roadmap, which outlines the most important priorities for preventing elder abuse in America. DOJ has created a free online curriculum for attorneys to help them identify and respond to elder abuse. HHS will be creating a voluntary national adult protective services (APS) data system, according to the press release. This will allow data collection to identify and address gaps that currently exist about these victims. The Elder Justice Roadmap identifies the top five priorities for understanding and reducing elder abuse, many of which naturally are related to caregivers and long term care.
The top five priorities include:
  • Awareness
  • Brain Health
  • Caregiving
  • Economics
  • Resources
Why do nursing homes factor in? Well the document reveals these following points:

Internet could help isolated seniors out of their loneliness

Research by a UK think tank called The Policy Exchange shows that about four in 10 people in the UK aged 65 and over don’t have access to the Internet at home, even though they could benefit from it.

The senior citizens are losing out, it's reported, on a means of social interaction at a time of life when contact with others is particularly important.
Policy Exchange says a significant percentage of older people are very lonely and that the World Wide Web could alleviate some of that loneliness. All it would take would be a cool one billion Euro to bring dramatic social and economic benefits. So can the elderly learn to love tech? And do they even want to?
Rosemary Sargentson could be the "silver surfer" poster child Policy Exchange has in mind when it suggests that a significant investment should be made to help pensioners learn how to get online. She's a little older than your average child though. A frail, but elegant lady, she doesn't have time to give her exact age because she's busy learning new skills - getting to, then using, and then possibly even enjoying the Internet.

Elderly Ex-Offenders are Finding They are Unwelcome in Nursing Home Care

  By  on July 1, 2014

Getting out of jail can be a tough transition for anyone. For a growing numbers of seniors leaving prison life in need of nursing care, however, finding a home that can take them in can be a real challenge, if not impossible.
Many nursing homes refuse to take in ex-offenders, either limited by state law or concerned about how housing ex-offenders may appear to other residents and their families. Yet that means when it comes time for the elderly to be released, there is often no place willing to provide the care they need.
“The Department of Corrections had a growing number of inmates who met skilled nursing home level of care criteria and were eligible to be released, but couldn’t be released unless they could get a nursing home to take them,” Mike Lawlor, Connecticut’s undersecretary for criminal justice policy and planning said. “It was extremely difficult. Most are for-profit and are reluctant to take someone coming directly out of [prison] because they’re worried about how it would impact business.
